Hurricanes and Port Canaveral

Is a hurricane headed for your upcoming cruise? There’s no need to panic. Here we’ll answer a few of the most frequently asked questions and share some tips to help you prepare for your hurri-cruise.

The “Cruise Must Go On”

Cancelled cruises are very rare. A storm may change your cruise ship’s itinerary, but it likely won’t result in a cancellation. Cruise lines will do everything in their power to ensure the “cruise goes on.” Ships will be redirected around a storm and destinations will be altered in order to keep passengers away from inclement weather.

Check Your Flights

Even if your cruise itinerary remains unchanged, your flight schedule may still be subject to delays. Air travel can be unpredictable and any cancellations at one airport can affect things across the whole US.  To be safe, you may want to consider flying in a day or two early to prevent any last minute travel complications.

If you booked a Go Port package and your flight schedule changes, make sure to speak with one of our reservation specialists. We are available from 9 AM to 10 PM at 855-755-4637 seven days a week to adjust any one of our Snooze Cruise packages to your needs.

Be Prepared for Rough Seas

Most ships can reach speeds up to 24 knots so they can easily outrun storms which only travel at about 8 to 10 knots. Although the captain will try to steer clear of any bad weather, you may face some rough seas as your ship skirts the edges of a storm. It’s wise to be prepared and bring abroad your favorite seasickness remedy.

Can you get a Refund?

On most cruise lines, you will only get a refund if your whole cruise is cancelled. And as mentioned earlier, cruise lines will do everything in their power to make sure that doesn’t happen. Ships will sail around storms and alter itineraries in order to avoid inclement weather. However, if your cruise does end up getting cut short, cruise lines will usually issue a prorated refund for the days that were missed.

Travel Insurance

Cruise lines are not liable for inclement weather. Therefore, you’ll want to have travel insurance in the event that you miss your cruise due to a storm to make sure you’re compensated. Something else to keep in mind is shore excursions. Rough seas may prevent your ship from docking in port. All tour operators have different cancellation policies, so be sure to read the fine print before putting down a deposit or pre-paying for your excursion in full.

During a hurricane or any other inclement weather, the Go Port team can help you reserve extra nights at your hotel until air traffic resumes or make the appropriate transportation arrangements. Whether your cruise itinerary or flight schedules are altered, we will work with you to adjust your package to fit your changing travel arrangements.
