On Saturday, June 25th, children from ages 5 to 15 will gather at 9am in Port Canaveral’s Cruise Ship Terminal #3 for the Free Kids’ Fishing Clinic. Kids’ Fishing Clinics are one-day educational events sponsored by the Florida Fish and Wild Life Conservation Commission (FWC) and Florida Sport Fishing Association (FSFA). These free clinics provide a fun family outing and encourage appreciation of the marine environment. There will be five mandatory skill stations set up: Casting, Knot Tying, Fishing Tackle, Good Angler and Touch Tank. The Touch Tank will contain small crabs and other assorted marine life for participants to experience first hand. After about an hour of instruction, children will receive a free rod and reel (compliments of local sponsors— while supplies lasts). Fishing equipment and bait are provided as well, but organizers encourage children who own tackle to bring it. Fishing will take place on the open elevated dock along the main channel of the port. Volunteers will assist in rigging lines, identifying catches, taking pictures and keeping children supplied with bait. The FSFA even places chum bags in the water around the docks the night before to ensure better angling. The Kids’ Fishing Clinic will teach participants the vulnerability of Florida’s marine ecosystems and provide a positive fishing experience. Adults must accompany their children in this experience and are encouraged to bring folding chairs, hats and sun block.
