Norwegian Cruise Line Changes Carry-On Beverage Policy

As of July 15th, Norwegian Cruise Line no longer allows passengers to bring aboard any drinks such as soda, water, or juices, in addition to alcohol. The only exception being purified or distilled water in factory-sealed containers for use in conjunction with medical devices or infant formula and fully sealed or corked wine bottles. These are subject to screening and a corkage fee. Guests are also not permitted to bring aboard any beverages in ports of call. Everything must be consumed or discarded at the security check-point. If you purchase alcohol in port or on the ship, Norwegian will safely store your bottles for the remainder of your cruise.

Why the change in policy? Guests have attempted to smuggle alcoholic beverages onboard, often trying to do so in non-alcoholic containers. This in turn has caused dedicated cruise line personnel to spend time inspecting a large volume of liquids. This has had negative impact on the embarkation process and security resources. Norwegian Cruise Line claims that this change in policy will move focus to other screening efforts besides inspection of all beverages being brought onboard.
